A deep dive into the Odyssey

Over ten weeks, we move through Homer's epic book by book, examining key moments and their ripple through Greek mythology, art, philosophy, and modern literature. You'll prepare three passages each week and discuss them in class.

Ten weeks of Homer

We begin the weekend of February 7th and move through the Odyssey together. One book per week, passages prepared in advance, group discussion in class.

Week One

Books One and Two

We begin meeting the Gods and understanding how humans are responsible for the fate they end up with. We are introduced to the side of story of Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, and Orestes and we meet Telemachus and Penelope, at home in Ithaca.

Week Five

Books Nine through Eleven

Odysseus recounts the story of his crew meeting Polyphemus the cyclops, and Circe advises Odysseus how to reach The Underworld to speak with the shades of the dead.

Week Ten

Books Twenty-three and Twenty-four

Odysseus' final battle with the suitors in Ithaca and his reunion with his wife Penelope, and father Laertes.
